JOVICA MILANOVIC, foreign member of AESS from 2007., son of Vlastimir and Srbijanka (maiden name Jovic), Foreign Member of Serbian Academy of Engineering Sciences since January 2007, was born on 10^th December 1962 in Okruglica, Svrljig, Republic of Serbia. In late 1966 he moved to Belgrade where he finished primary school (1977) and 6^th Belgrade’s Grammar School (1981), both times as the best student of his generation. He enrolled at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering in Belgrade in 1981 and commenced his studies in 1982 after compulsory army service. He graduated in 1987 as the best student of his generation in Electrical power division between March 1987 and March 1988. He received his MSc degree form the University of Belgrade in 1991 and his PhD degree from the University of Newcastle, Newcastle, Australia, in 1996. In 2008, he was awarded higher doctorate (DSc) by the University of Manchester, Manchester, UK, for the thesis “Dealing with uncertainties in power system dynamics and power quality studies”.

After completing his undergraduate studies he worked for one year with Energoprojekt (Hidroinzinjering) in Belgrade and then, in November 1988, he moved to Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the University of Belgrade as teaching and research assistant in the department of Electrical Power Converters and Drives. In February 1993 he went to Australia to pursue his PhD studies at the University of Newcastle. A part from the research at the University of Newcastle he was also involved (since July 1993) in lecturing, selected topics in two undergraduate courses, and tutorials and laboratory demonstrations in several undergraduate courses. Between February 1996 and January 1998 he was Lecturer at the University of Tasmania, Australia. In January 1998 he moved to the UK as Lecturer in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Electronics at University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST). On 1^st October 2004 UMIST merged with Victoria University of Manchester and became The University of Manchester (UM). At UM he was promoted to Senior Lecturer in March 2001, Reader in March 2003 and Professor on 1^st April 2005. Since 1^st April 2007 Professor Milanovic is Deputy Head of School (Research) of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of The University of Manchester.

One of the major contributions of Professor Milanovic’s research is probabilistic/stochastic modelling of uncertainties of events and parameters in Power Quality and Power Systems Dynamics studies. This non-deterministic approach to analysis and problem solving in the areas like torsional oscillations of the shafts of turbogenerators, dynamic load response, power system stability, assessment of voltage sags, harmonic propagation and assessment of financial losses inquired to industry due to inadequate quality of electricity supply is a common stream that connects various areas of Prof Milanovic’s research and which has lead to him becoming one of the world leading experts in the areas of power quality and power system dynamics.

Profesor Milanovic presented over 80 invited courses and lectures to industry and at academic institutions around the world, published over 190 papers (56 in international journals) which attracted over 100 citations by other researchers, and lead or participated in numerous national (Australia and UK) and international industrial and research projects with total monetary value exceeding 5 million US dollars.

ЈОВИЦА МИЛАНОВИЋ, инострани члан Академије инжењерских наука Србије од јануара 2007 године, рођен је 10. децембра 1962. године у Округлици, Сврљиг, Република Србија од оца Властимира и мајке Србијанке, рођене Јовић. Крајем 1966. године долази у Београд где завршава основну школу (1977) и VI Београдску гимназију (1981), оба пута као најбољи ученик у генерацији. На Електротехнички факултет Универзитета у Београду се уписује 1981. а студије започиње по одслужењу војног рока септембра 1982. године. Дипломирао је 1987. године као најбољи студент на Енергетском одсеку, у периоду март 1987.-март 1988. Магистрирао је 1991. године на Електротехничком факултету у Београду, а докторирао 1996. године на Универзитету у Њукаслу, Њукасл, Аустралија. Виши докторат (DSc) за рад у области „Уважавање непоузданости у студијама динамике електроенергетских система и квалитета електричне енергије“ добио је од Универзитета у Манчестеру, Манчестер, Велика Британија 2008. године.

По завршетку студија, годину дана ради у Енергопројекту (Хидроинжењеринг) у Београду, а затим у новембру 1998. године, прелази на Електротехнички факултет као асистент-приправник (асистент од 1991.) на катедри за Енергетске Претвараче и Погоне.У фебруару 1993. године одлази у Аустралију на докторске студије на Универзитет у Њукаслу. У фебрурау 1996. године се запошљава као доцент на University of Tasmania, Хобарт, Аустралија где остаје до јануара 1998. године. У јануару 1998. напушта Аустралију и одлази у Велику Британију као доцент на Електротехничком факултету на University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) који се 1. октобра 2004. године сједињује са Victoria University of Manchester и мења име у The University of Manchester. На Универзитету у Манчестеру бива унапређен у ванредног професора у марту 2001., редовног професора у марту 2003. и „катедарског“ професора 1. априла 2005. године. Од 1. априла 2007. године професор Милановић je продекан за науку на истом факултету.

Један од главних доприноса истраживачког рада професора Милановића је уважавање непоузданости параметара електроенергетског система, било путем стохастичког моделовања или применом рачуна вероватноће, на динамичко понашање појединачних елемената и целокупног електроенергетког система. Овај недетерминистички приступ анализи и решавању проблема из области торзионих осцилација вратила тзрбогенератора, динамичког одзива потрошње, стабилности електроенергетског система, прорачуна пропада напона у систему, простирања хармоника кроз електроенергетске мреже и процене финансијских губитака у индустрији услед неадекватног квалитета електричне енергије је нит која повезује различите области истраживања професора Милановића и која је допринела да постане један од водећих светских стручњака у области квалитета електричне енергије и динамике електроенергетских система.

Гостујући је професор на постдипломским студијама на Универзитету у Новом Саду (Србија), Универзитетy у Тузли (БиХ) и Универзитету Св. Ћирило и Методије (Македонија). Професор Милановић је одржао око 80 курсева и предавања по позиву у индустрији и на универзитетима широм света, објавио више од 190 научних радова (56 у водећим светским часописима) цитираних преко 100 пута у радовима других истраживача, и учествовао или руководио великим бројем националних (Аустралија, Велика Британија) и међународних истражуивачких и индустријских пројеката чија укупна монетарна вредност превазилази 5 милиона америчких долара.
